Reading: Activating Prior Knowledge

When we read something new we are often reminded of things we already know about the text. It might be something we've done before, read about, seen on TV, or seen at the movies. This is called prior knowledge.

We activate our prior knowledge to help us understand the text better.

We were reading a story called "Jump!" about some people who went bungee jumping. Mr Mitchell had done bungee jumping before with his 33 year old son. He said he wanted to do it but when he got the edge he got so scared that he did not what to do it. This gave us some prior knowledge about "Jump!" which made it easier to understand.
